Sound Business Music Industry Foundations for Artists
Make music. Know your business. Build your future.

Building a career in music takes more than creativity. Understanding how to manage your finances, plan projects and navigate the business side of the industry can help you make informed decisions about your work and your future.
The Indigenous Music Office (IMO), in partnership with Canada's Music Incubator (CMI), presents Sound Business, a free seven-part online learning series designed for Indigenous artists, music entrepreneurs and industry professionals.
Whether you're managing your own music career, preparing your first grant application or looking to strengthen your business skills, Sound Business offers practical knowledge you can put to work.
What you'll Learn

- Music revenue: Where your income comes from, including royalties, publishing, performances and other opportunities.
- Budgeting and financial planning: How to plan for recordings, releases, tours and other music projects.
- Bookkeeping and taxes: Managing expenses, tracking income and understanding your financial responsibilities.
- Grant applications: Preparing realistic budgets, developing stronger applications and understanding financial reporting requirements.
